Candy: a Brief History

A very wise man (Jamie Hewlett) once said that it’s important to put little bits of yourself into your characters. It helps make them real. I think out of all of my OC’s Candy has the most parts of me in her. It’s also important to “write what you know” so that you don’t wind up making a bunch of characters based on shit you know nothing about and portray them poorly…that being said…I don’t know dick about heroin use, life threatening injury or jail time... but I do know what it’s like to have the most important person in your world taken away from you and that is one common trait we both share.

I started this with the intent of keeping it fast little doodles to give you guys some insight into Candy's history. But it wound up becoming so much more than that, I really regret doing this in un-erasable pencil. And yet it adds a certain roughness that I feel is appropriate given whose history this is.

Candy.

Age 5: Candy meets Jackey. She found her running for her life away from a cosmetics testing lab and begged the child to hide her from the scientists pursuing her. Candy was a very lonely little girl so she jumped at the opportunity to have an "imaginary friend" and took her home.

Age: 16 Candy's childhood was pretty uneventful until she became a teenager and decided to MAKE IT eventful. She grew up living with her father whom she despises with every fiber of her being. And she thought she had life oh-so rough...this was her justification for drug use (Heroin, Drinking, and Smoking) and she had little to no respect for authority. (She still doesn't) she got a load of pointless piercings, hung out with dregs of society, drank heavily and smoked all because she felt some type of unwarranted self importance that she can do ANYTHING regardless of how good for bad for her it may be and she assumed anyone who told her otherwise was out to get her.

Age 18: The guy standing behind Candy in her 16 year old panel was a friend who grew to be her Boyfriend, Gerald. All you need to know about Gerald is that he cheated on Candy so she cut off his penis. Needless to say he was not too pleased with that and when he found Candy again it was ON like Donkey Kong. after cutting off her arm, slicing her face and dropping a fire escape on to her, he assumed Candy was dead and in an effort to dispose of the body he rented a wood chipper and throw Candy in. the wood chipper jammed and Neighbors who heard the noise called the police, Gerald fled and left Candy for dead. The police arrived assuming they were going to there to remove a corpse. But upon closer inspection were shocked to find that Candy was still alive.

Age 19: after a year of painful rehabilitation, jail time and joining a gang of Amazonian warriors. Candy wanted nothing more than to escape…she spent some time on her fathers army base and the current presidential administration was there recruiting Guinea pigs to be one of the first to test experimental technology that made time travel possible but finding anyone who would go on a “suicide mission” was proving to be difficult. Candy was all too happy to sign up for the mission and was immediately trained to be sent back in time to stop the horrible post apocalyptic future they knew as every day life from happening.

Age: 21: I mentioned Candy has a problem with authority right?...she also has a problem with following directions and instead of actually doing her mission…Candy finds that the past has way more to offer her than the future did, she made friends, fought Zombies, found married bliss and started a family. What more could a girl want?

Age23: this happiness is short lived…her friends’ drift, her husband dies…Candy becomes a hollow shell.

Age 26 a.k.a CANDY NOW: being a hollow shell does not get work done. So Candy threw herself back into her mission; saving doctors, scientists and anyone who could help make the future a better place as well as finding ways to make the electric car a possibility. Since all these things went unheard of in her history books. She lives out of her car with her baby traveling the country and has made new friends (or in Arick’s case very special friend ) and while she’s still pretty dead on the inside she has learned how to cope and live her life.

Age 42: Candy grows into a bitter lonely old lady…you’re all so shocked I am sure…but not just ANY bitter old lady, she’s the head of a major corporation and has built an empire on making the future brighter and better. Since she could not have the perfect nuclear family, white picket fence life style she went for the next best thing…Money…if she can abolish drugs, fund science and medicine in the process sounds like a mission accomplished am I right?

Age 50: SILLY MEME!, you thought Candy was going to make it to 50…Ho,Ho, Ho that’s so funny…but you can’t abolish things like drugs without stepping on a few toes. Unfortunately one of those toes was the head of an underground cult of drug users plotting to over through the new world order Candy worked so hard to put in place.

This was a lot of fun to draw and to give you guys a little taste of the history of a character most of you have known for so long but have been kept in the dark about…some things to keep in mind that Candy’s future can still change. this is just my current predictions for it... there’s lots of shit that I left out / didn’t account for…but I guess you’ll just have to keep watching to find out where Candy’s journey takes her.
